Cheddar Gorge cuts through the Mendip Hills in Somerset. It is the largest gorge in the United
Kingdom with a maximum depth of 371 feet. The gorge is the site of the famous Cheddar Caves.
Cox's Cave was accidentally discovered in 1837 by mill-owner George Cox when one of his workers
fell through a hole in its roof. Gough's Cave was discovered in 1890 by Cox's nephew, Richard Cox
Gough. In 1903 Britain's oldest complete skeleton was discovered in Gough's Cave. The
9000-year-old skeleton was subsequently named 'Cheddar Man'.
