St
Decuman, the Parish Church
of Watchet. Decuman is said to have been born in the
7th century
in Rhoscrowther in
Pembrokeshire, Wales where a church is dedicated to him. He is said to
have been
of noble birth. Decuman left Wales and landed at Dunster
where he became a hermit at nearby Watchet,
serving as a pastor and
physician for the local inhabitants. He is said to have been
beheaded by a pagan.
His name is believed to derive from the Latin 'decumanus' meaning 'farmer of
tithes'. The name
Watchet is of celtic origin and means 'place under the
wood'.
