The church of St John the
Baptist has existed since at least the 12th century,
but in the 14th century
it was completely rebuilt on part of Bristol's medieval
town wall, hence its rather
unusual colloquial name of St John-on-the-Wall.
The arch beneath the tower
is the only surviving medieval gateway
into the old town.
